Gov’t in China during WWII –Democracy If U.S. had to compare selves to another country…it would be China –Friends/ allies 1937: Civil War in China –Chiang Kai-Shek (Democracy) –Mao Zedong (Communist) 1938: Japan invades (WWII) –Stop Civil War/ focus on fighting Japan WWII ends –Civil War resumes fighting

U.S. sent billions to Chiang (Dem.) –Corrupt take $$$ for selves People STARVING in China 1948: Mao winning (C) Chiang (D) wants U.S. military to help –U.S. won’t send troops/ think corrupt 1949: Chiang (D) flees China –Knows he’s going to lose to Comm. –Takes control of island Taiwan 1950: Mao takes control of China –China turns COMMUNIST –People’s Republic of China SHOCKS Americans

4 Korean War –North Korea (C) –South Korea (D) Involved over 16 nations M.A.S.H. –Mobile Army Surgical Hospitals –Started being used during Korean War –97% survival rate –TV show based on Korean War “Forgotten War” –Right after WWII –Right before Vietnam Over 2.5 million killed/ wounded –54,000 U.S. killed –103,000 U.S. wounded

6 Korea –controlled by Japan during WWII Divided into 2 separate countries after WWII Dividing line: 38th parallel of latitude North Korea (C) –Soviet Union equipped soldiers GOOD South Korea (D) –U.S. supplied (not a lot of aid) U.S. occupied South Korea until June 1949 June 1950: North Korea attack across 38th parallel –90,000 troops –In days, take capital (Seoul)

7 Truman wants to aid South Korea –Does NOT ask Congress –Gets permission from United Nations UN allows U.S. to send aid –No declaration of war from Congress Truman places MacArthur in charge Truman orders U.S. troops in Japan to South Korea –Not trained for monsoons or rice paddies –Not enough equipment North Korea forces South Korean & U.S. to retreat to Pusan

8 Sept. 1950: 15 UN countries help in South Korea counterattack Battle of Inchon (lasts 4 days) Marines land & attack North Koreans from behind Oct. 1950: North Koreans driven north of 38th parallel –Take back Seoul (capitol) MacArthur follow & attack in North Korea –Mountainous/ freezing –Take North Korean capitol Pyongyang Oct. 1950: Allies reach Chinese border Nov. 1950: China joins North Korea –300,000 Chinese attack Force U.S. & UN out of N. Korea –Take back Seoul (South Korean capitol) China involved: major war…
