Do Now On a separate sheet of paper, write the answers to the following:  What is heat and how does it flow?  What are the three types of heat transfer?  Describe each of the above types of heat transfer.

Does Temperature Affect Dissolving? (4 min) Does the temperature of water affect the amount of coating that dissolves from an M & M?  List three variables and how you will control them.

Does Temperature Affect Dissolving? (4 min) Does the temperature of water affect the amount of coating that dissolves from an M & M?  List three variables and how you will control them.  Kind of container  Amount of water  Color of the M&M’s  When the M&M’s are placed in the water  Location of the M&M’s in each cup

Does Temperature Affect Dissolving? (4 min) Does the temperature of water affect the amount of coating that dissolves from an M & M?  List three variables and how you will control them.  Kind of container  Amount of water  Color of the M&M’s  When the M&M’s are placed in the water  Location of the M&M’s in each cup The only variable that we are going to change is temperature.

DOES THE TEMPERATURE OF WATER AFFECT THE AMOUNT OF COATING THAT DISSOLVES FROM AN M & M??? WRITE YOUR HYPOTHESIS (1 MIN) Question & Hypothesis

Procedure & Conclusions (15 min) Follow the procedures on the back of the first page.  Room-temperature water is already at your desk.  Pour the cold water and hot water using the cups at the front table. After the lab, answer the questions (#2 – 5) relating to the lab. When finished, continue working on your lab notebook until everyone is done and we can move onto the next demo.

Expected Results (1 min) More color and sugar dissolve from the M&M in the hot water and less in the room temperature and cold water.  This means there is more chocolate visible on the M&M in the hot water than there is in the room-temperature and cold water.  The color and sugar in the room-temperature water dissolve somewhere between the cold and hot water, but are more similar to the cold than the hot.

Explain It (1 min) The reason why sugar dissolves at a faster rate in hot water has to do with increased molecular motion. The added energy in the hot water causes water molecules to move faster and sucrose molecules to vibrate faster. This added movement tends to make the bonds between sucrose molecules easier to overcome.

WE ARE GOING TO COMPARE THE SOLUBILITY OF SALT AND SUGAR IN DIFFERENT TEMPERATURES OF WATER – WHICH ONE IS MORE EASILY AFFECTED? WHAT DOES THAT TELL YOU ABOUT THEIR HEAT CAPACITIES? Salt vs. Sugar Demo (3 min)

TAKE THE NEXT 10 MINUTES TO FINISH THE REST OF THE LAB MANUAL INCLUDING ANALYSIS QUESTIONS BASED OFF THE LAST LAB WE DID. THIS PART ALSO HELPS US PRACTICE OUR TABLE & GRAPH ANALYSIS SKILLS. Demonstration Follow-Up Questions

Today’s Agenda 5 min Do Now 5 min Important Dates 35 min M & M Heat Lab 15 min Lab Notebooks

Notebook Guidelines I. Question II. Hypothesis III. Procedure IV. Observations V. Data VI. Initial Conclusions Each of these sections must be in your notebook with a HEADING and NEATLY WRITTEN. Table of Contents should be updated as well.

YOU WILL NEED TO COMPLETE A LAB NOTEBOOK FOR TWO OF THE FOUR LABS WE DO THIS WEEK. EXTRA ENTRIES WILL BE EXTRA CREDIT (HIGHLY ENCOURAGED). USE THE REST OF TODAY TO CONTINUE WORKING ON YOUR ENTRIES. This Week’s Expectations
