Simile : a figure of speech that expresses a resemblance between things of different kinds (usually formed with “like” or “as”). Example: Life is like an onion: You peel it off one layer at a time, and sometimes you weep.” Metaphor : a figure of speech in which an implied comparison is made between two unlike things that actually have something important in common. Example: My father is a bear in the mornings. Idiom : an expression, word, or phrase that has a figurative meaning that is comprehended in regard to a common use of that expression that is separate from the literal. Ex: “He just kicked the bucket.” “Break a leg.” “Burn the midnight oil.”

Hyperbole : rhetorical device in which statements are exaggerated. It may be used to evoke strong feelings or to create a strong impression, but is not meant to be taken literally. Ex: “I nearly died laughing.” or “I tried a thousand times.” Onomatopoeia : a word that imitates or suggests the source of the sound that it describes. Ex: “ Ding Dong! The bells are chiming.” Alliteration : device that consists in repeating the same consonant sound at the beginning of the two or more words in close succession. Ex: “Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers…”
