6 Risk – A Definition The possibility of suffering harm or loss; danger A factor, thing, element, or course involving uncertain danger; a hazard (Clancy,F 2006)

7 Definitions A hazard is anything that has the potential to cause harm. Occupational risk refers to the likelihood and the severity of an injury or an illness occurring as a result of exposure to a hazard. (European Agency for Safety and Health at Work 2006)

8 The Ideal Employee? Someone who: Stays in the job longer Has low absenteeism Is punctual Has a higher level of commitment

9 Risks What are the Risks of providing employment? Research has shown that people with disability: Stay in jobs longer Have low absenteeism Are punctual Have a higher level of commitment (Beyer, S. 10 What about Employers? “Employers were found to be supportive, but careful reassessment of risk assessment procedures and an approach agreed among key professionals to the disclosure of information about the person is required if a balance is to be reached in obtaining a job and keeping employers and supported workers safe.” (Beyer, S.
