Northwest National Marine Renewable Energy Center A 3D Hydrodynamic model of inland marine waters of Washington State, United States, for tidal resource and environmental impact assessment Mitsuhiro Kawase, School of Oceanography Kristen M. Thyng, Department of Mechanical Engineering University of Washington Presented at Puget Sound Modeling Open House Center for Urban Horticulture, University of Washington June 4, 2009

Northwest National Marine Renewable Energy Center NW National Marine Renewable Energy Center (NNMREC): A US Department of Energy-funded partnership of OSU and UW to support wave and tidal energy development Oregon State University: –Headquarters and Director (Bob Paasch) –Focus on Wave Energy –College of Engineering, Oceanography, Hatfield Marine Sciences Center University of Washington: –Co-Director (Phil Malte) –Focus on Tidal Energy –Mechanical Engineering, Oceanography, Applied Physics Laboratory Industry Partners: –Snohomish PUD, BioSonics, PNWER, Verdant Power, EPRI, Sound & Sea Tech.

Northwest National Marine Renewable Energy Center Tidal In-Stream Energy Conversion (TISEC) Not a barrage … but rather a turbine (1 MW shown)

Northwest National Marine Renewable Energy Center Role of Modeling in NNMREC Site and resource characterization Environmental impact assessment Device and array optimization

Northwest National Marine Renewable Energy Center 1-D Channel Network Model R/V Jack Robertson Polagye et al. (2008, 2009) Similar to Lavelle et al. (1988) Energy extraction represented as resistivity in the channel For rapid resource characterization and far-field impact on tidal range / depth- averaged current

Northwest National Marine Renewable Energy Center 3D Hydrodynamic Model Stanford University SUNTANS model (Fringer et al., 2006) E. Strait of Juan de Fuca, San Juan Islands, S. Georgia Basin, Puget Sound (extension to the entire Georgia Basin planned) Triangular mesh unstructured grid, 250m average resolution, 15m vertical resolution Currently tides only (fresh/saline forcing and stratification planned in future) For more detailed site/resource characterization, longer- term and water column impact assessment

Northwest National Marine Renewable Energy Center Depth-averaged currents in the SUNTANS model of Puget Sound / San Juan Islands Admiralty Inlet Tacoma Narrows Deception Pass Rosario Strait and Guemes Channel

Northwest National Marine Renewable Energy Center Model calibration, validation and analysis Spatial structure Comparison with current speeds from shipboard ADCP survey (left), August 18, 2007 Time series analysis Comparison with u, v velocity, speed and power from stationary ADCP (blue), August 18 – September 19, 2007 Comparison with data from ongoing NNMREC field work Basin-wide tidal harmonic analysis and energy flux calculation

Northwest National Marine Renewable Energy Center Device and array optimization R/V Jack Robertson A. Aliseda (UW-ME), J. Riley (UW-ME) Wave-Current Flume: Experimental studies of tidal turbine wakes. Computer Cluster: Parallel simulations of tidal turbine wakes using commercial software package (Fluent).
