2  Students can be divided into groups by components: water, soil, seeds, sunlight, air, flowers  Each group can explain the significance of their component.  Students can then move into heterogeneous groups and create small group displays or the whole class can do one big one.

3 WHAT’S GROWING IN THE GARDEN OF REPRESENTATIVE SELF-GOVERNMENT?  Flowers=Virginia House of Burgesses, Mayflower Compact (1620), Fundamental Orders of Connecticut, Pennsylvania’s Frame of Government, town meetings  The flower petals should describe/define the example of self- government.

4 WHAT COMPONENTS MAKE GROWTH POSSIBLE? SUNLIGHT  Sunlight= Distance between the Great Britain and the 13 colonies;  Rays of sunshine should explain the significance of the distance  salutary neglect- practice of England ignoring the economic and political actions of the 13 colonies

7 WHAT COMPONENTS MAKE GROWTH POSSIBLE? SEEDS  Seeds= political beliefs and values of colonists  Seeds should contain terms and definition  Limited government  Freedom of speech  Trial by jury  Consent of the governed  Separation of powers  Natural rights  Social contract theory

8 WHAT COMPONENTS MAKE GROWTH POSSIBLE? FERTILE SOIL  Soil- urgency of colonists’ needs  How will decisions be made?  Who will be in charge?  How will we protect ourselves?  How will we get along?  How will we generate revenue?

9 WHAT COMPONENTS MAKE GROWTH POSSIBLE? TIME  Time-span of years needed for the colonies to establish self- government  1619-1776
