Coronary Heart Disease Textbook pages 168-169

Coronary Heart Disease: Coronary Arteries  Coronary heart disease involves the blockage of the coronary arteries.  Do you know where your coronary arteries are?  Textbook page 161, Fig. 8.20a. The coronary arteries are outlined in yellow. Swap these two labels – Textbook error

Coronary arteries Coronary = “like a crown”

Coronary Arteries – why are they important? Let’s think…  What are our hearts made of? What tissues is it made up of, mostly?  What are these tissues made up of?  What do these cells need for respiration and cellular activities?

Coronary Arteries – why are they important? Let’s think…  What are our hearts made of? What tissues is it made up of, mostly? Muscle tissue  What are these tissues made up of? Muscle cells  What do these cells need for respiration and cellular activities? Glucose & Oxygen

But... where do the muscle cells get these nutrients from? Do they get it from the blood that flows through the four chambers? Answer: No. The cells in the heart muscle walls get their glucose and oxygen from the coronary arteries.

Coronary Heart Disease: Occlusion of Coronary Arteries  The coronary arteries supply blood containing glucose and oxygen that is needed for respiration to the heart muscle.  Coronary heart disease involves the blockage of the coronary arteries…  What might happen next? Swap these two labels – Textbook error!

Remember: What is the function of coronary arteries? Supply blood to the heart muscles GREATLY REDUCED! NARROWED! BLOCKED! SO WHAT?

Blood supply to the heart muscles GREATLY REDUCED! Insufficient oxygen and glucose Death of heart muscle at that region BLOCKED!

No longer able to pump blood to the rest of the body! Angina If extensive Heart attack! Death of heart muscle at that region
