PED 317 Chapter 2

 Three energy sources:  Glycolysis – Breakdown of glucose  Glycogenesis – Glucose is broken into glycogen and stored in the muscles  Glycogenolysis-Muscle glycogen is taken out of storage (muscle) and converted back into glucose so it may be used as an energy source

 Catabolism – Enzyme reaction which causes something to be “broken down”  Anabolism – Enzyme reaction which causes something to be “built or constructed”  Coupled Reaction – The breakdown of one compound provides energy for building another compound  Oxidation Reactions – Donating electrons  Reduction Reactions – Accepting Electrons

 At rest, the body uses carbohydrates and fats for energy.  Protein provides little energy for cellular activity, but serves as building blocks for the body's tissues.  During mild to severe muscular effort, the body relies mostly on carbohydrate for fuel.

Immediate Energy System (1 sec 10 sec) Anaerobic Energy System (10 sec – 2 min) Aerobic Energy System (2 min & beyond)
