2 Jesus’ life, death and resurrection Jesus Christ made such an impact that his birth marks the dividing point in human history. BC: Before Christ; AD: Anno Domini (In the year of our Lord).

3 Fall of Rome In AD 476 the last Roman Emperor of the west was defeated. The Roman Empire finally came to an end after controlling much of Europe for 500 years.

4 Discovery of electricity The discovery of electricity has gradually taken place over thousands of years. Since the first use of the term ‘electric’ in 1600, experiments gathered pace and became increasingly significant leading to the first batteries in 1800, the electric dynamo in 1831, and the light bulb in the late nineteenth century.

5 The telephone Many individuals contributed to the invention of the telephone, but Alexander Graham Bell was the first to be awarded a patent in 1876.

6 Aviation On 17 December 1903, Orville and Wilbur Wright proved to all the sceptics that humans could fly! Aeroplanes were used during World War I, but they took a while to catch on to everyone else.

7 Women’s suffrage Emmeline Pankhurst fought for women’s right to vote, but it wasn’t until 1928 that British women were allowed to vote on the same terms as men.

8 Holocaust Before and during World War II, nearly six million Jewish people were killed by Nazi Germany in an organised and systematic way.

9 D-Day landings On 6 June 1944, over 5,000 ships landed 175,000 Allied troops on the beaches of Normandy in Nazi-occupied France. This operation is considered to be a turning point of World War II.

10 Hiroshima and Nagasaki In August 1945, two atomic bombs were dropped over Japan. It was the first time nuclear weapons had ever been used in warfare and as many as 220,000 people were killed.

11 Civil Rights Movement Between 1955 and 1968, Martin Luther King Jr and others fought against the racial discrimination of African-Americans.

12 Moon landing Between On 20 July 1969, the Apollo XI lunar module, Eagle, landed on the moon and Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin became the first men to walk on the moon.

13 The Internet The creation of the Internet was a collaborative affair, but it was Tim Berners-Lee who came up with the World Wide Web, first implementing HTML, HTTP and URLs in March 1989.

14 Fall of the Berlin Wall When the Berlin Wall was breached on 9 November 1989, West and East Germany were reunited, but it also heralded the end of the Cold War and the division between Western Europe and the communist Eastern Soviet bloc.

15 9/11 On 11 September 2001, nearly 3,000 people died when hijacked aeroplanes flew into the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York, the Pentagon in Washington DC, and a field in Pennsylvania. In the days that followed, US President Bush launched his ‘war of terrorism’.
