1 Conformity Behaviour in agreement with generally accepted standards and practices; pressures that encourage us to accept social norms.

2 Social Norms A standard shared by members of a group, to which members are expected to conform. The most typical behaviour, attitudes or opinions found in a group.

3 Alienation A feeling that one does not share in the major values and goals of society. Marx wrote about the alienation of the proletariet, but now the term applies to anyone who does not share the major values in society and feels like an outsider.

4 Anarchy A theory that regards the absence of all direct or coercive government as a political ideal, and that proposes the cooperative and voluntary association of individuals and groups as the principal mode of organized society.

5 Anarchy The absence of authority and/or government. Political and social disorder due to the absence of governmental control A person that has felt extreme alienation is considered to be an anarchist.

6 Civil Disobedience The refusal to obey certain laws or governmental demands for the purpose of influencing legislation or government policy, characterized by employment of non violent techniques: boycotting, picketing, and nonpayment of taxes.

7 1. Conscientiousness: act out of self-respect, moral consistency and perception of the interest of society 2. Communication: to show personal disapproval of law (s) and raise public awareness 3. 8 Activism Involvement as a means of achieving political or other goals, sometimes by demonstrations, protests, etc.

11 Conformity…. BAD? Discourages social change Can lead people to resist the temptation to do things differently Can encourage people to accept practices that are wrong

12 Alienation…GOOD? Spurs reformers into action Leads individuals to struggle with the status quo Leaders and movements in society are born

13 Alienation…BAD? Can be so severe that people give up and accept life in the margins of society Can lead to suicide or substance abuse
