diane dutcher marianna jewell elaine smith step-by-step a way-finding design team

Problems - Outside Three modes of transport -- MARTA, on foot, & car In General: No maps No signs No appropriate direction givers If they DID exist: Not multi-lingual Not graphical Not consistent or properly associated Not in logical location Not catered to user group (ie, cars are directed to front of hospital, not parking)

Location: System of signs and maps (placement, orientation) All modes of transportation To and from the hospital Direction-Giving: Script for all current direction givers Signs themselves: (one sign?) Consistent Graphical Multi-lingual Solutions - Outside

Problems - Inside Current Hospital: Make use of landmarks: colored umbrellas Small size makes it easier to maneuver NO MAJOR PROBLEMS New Hospital: Larger in size Connection between old and new hospitals Lack of knowledge for return consumers

Solutions - Inside Place to Place Directions: –Interface could be layered by complexity (viewing options based on cognitive mapping) –Shortest path algorithm imbedded –Present as a storyboard if unable to program Physical Interactive Map –Paper/plastic map or mock-up –Potentially layered –User controls complexity Map form of user-interface –Could be printed from Place to Place interface –Color coordination or thematic element between hospital and map
