Using the Internet Welcome to the Library!

Research skills Week 7 Internet Just because you found it on the Internet, doesn’t mean it’s true

Internet is Good?  for personal interests,  for research  Find information that is not yet in print  Sometimes access information more quickly than from print resources (ex: national telephone numbers).

Internet is bad ?  Anyone can create an Internet site.  No formal evaluation before posted  Much information is copyrighted and not yet available on the Internet  Sometimes it is faster and easier to use a book or database  Most libraries provide access reliable databases online.

URL A web page address. URL stands for Uniform Resource Locator.

How can I tell if the info. I’m getting is any good?

Evaluate Sites Use the CARS evaluation checklist

Credibility Trustworthy source Author’s credentials/known & respected authority Evidence of quality control Organizational support Is the site kept up-to-date ( look for date of page creations/revision)

Credibility Goal An authoritative source Source supplies some good evidence that allows you to trust it

Accuracy Up to date Factual Detailed /Exact/Comprehensive Audience and purpose reflect intentions of completeness & accuracy

Accuracy/Reliable Is it correct? Is it current? Will it be correct tomorrow? Is it true only for a specific culture? Is is relevant for all the cultures in your audience? Will the information remain current until you complete your project? Gives the whole truth!?!

Reasonableness Concerned with truth Do I know whether the information is fact or someone else's opinion ? Do I know whether the information is free of racial, religious, or other forms of prejudice?

Reasonableness Fair Balanced Objective Reasoned No conflict of interest Absence of fallacies No slanted tone

Support Listed sources Documentation supplied Contact information Claims supported

Support Goal Source that provides convincing evidence for the claims made Source you can triangulate (find at least 2 other sources that support it.)

Test the Web Site E-mail the author Research the author or publishing organization using the Internet Find out who owns the URL Backtrack the URL by removing its elements one by one

Analyze the URL Back up through the URL to piece together the site’s origin Look at the domain names.com/.net/.mil.edu/.org/.gov

Indications of a Bad Site Usage errors – poor punct., no caps. Misspelled words – if it was too much effort to check spelling, what else might be wrong Anonymity – author should be stated up front Statistics or dates – easy to make mistakes, double check with another source Revision of the page not noted or not current

More indications of a Bad Site URL moves or disappears abruptly – instability of address Personal sites often contain a tilde - are YOU an expert? Verify all links from the site – site may be good, but links may not be verified, updated or overlooked because of time
