18 Dealing with John 7:53-8:11 The Facts This text does not appear in any of the earliest Greek manuscripts No Eastern church Father commented on this until the 12th century The story is placed in several places by later scribes The language does not fit John “teachers of religious law and the Pharisees” “Mount of Olives” “Teacher” It disrupts the Festival Cycle of John

19 Dealing with John 7:53-8:11 So, what? The evidence shows John never included this story in his Gospel – it was added later. Nonetheless, it is most likely that this is a true story, an authentic piece passed down from the apostles. Knowing this, the scribes tried to include it in its most logical place, but it was not written by John. A displaced story, a text without a context. It is authentic, but should be treated separately. And as a result, we'll not be studying it in this study John
