2 Pretest Those who score 100s on this test do not have do part 2 on the homework assignment. Label the sentence S or CD. Put brackets around each clause. The first one has been done for you.

3 FSGPT Discuss the similarities and differences in the construction the sentences you see.

4 Identifying Clauses Work with your partner to break your assigned compound sentence into two clauses. 2, 3, 4, 6, 7 Place your clauses on the board and use the appropriate conjunction and punctuation.

5 FSGPT 1.What types of clauses do you see? How do you know it is that type? 2.What is the difference between an independent clause and a dependent clause?

6 Personal Narrative Prewriting What is the most important relationship you have (or had) in your life? Describe it. Why is it so important to you? What is something you do (or did) with this person or animal? How would your life be different if you had not had this relationship?

7 Critical Writing Write one simple and one compound sentence about recess. Put brackets around the clauses.

8 Comic Strip Peer Review If you are done with your comic strip dialogue, have a peer evaluate it for accuracy. Do not write on the checklist. Instead, make comments in the black space between the two comics.

11 Evaluating Intros Look at the first line or two of each chapter in “The Moon and I.” Which do you think are effective? They make you want to continue reading. They start to create a mental image. They make you question something. Write down the page number of three opening lines you think were most effective.

12 FSGPT Discuss your list of three favorite intro lines. What makes them effective?

13 Personal Narrative Prewriting Use the events and relationships prewrites to generate at least two topics for your personal narrative. Make sure to write down something very SPECIFIC. Good example = The moment my husband’s plane landed at the Air Force base after he had been away for six months during the Gulf War. Bad example = My husband served in the Gulf War.

14 Topic Approval and Graphic Organizer Ask your partner if your topic is too broad. Help each other narrow the focus to a moment in time. Once your topic is approved by a teacher, begin completing the graphic organizer.

15 Critical Writing Referring back to your three favorite intros copied from “The Moon and I,” use one of them as a model for the intro to your personal narrative.

16 Sentence Variety FSPT: How do you combine simple sentences to make compound sentences? Why do good writers use a variety of sentence types?

17 Combining Sentences Work with your partner to combine the sentences given to you. You can create compound sentences using for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so. You can create complex sentences using because, while, although, therefore.

18 Drafting Use your prewriting graphic organizer to guide you as you write the first draft of your personal narrative. Refer to the prompt and the rubric to stay on track.
