CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM

LEARNING OBJECTIVES To know the structure of the heart To understand the blood flow around the heart To be able apply this knowledge to exam questions

Why is the cardiovascular system so important? Aerobic work- relies on the constant supply and use of oxygen. Aerobic capacity- ‘the ability to supply and use oxygen for prolonged periods of time’. e.g. marathon runners have a high aerobic capacity

Interaction between the cardiovascular system, respiratory system and vascular system? Receives blood from lungs forces blood around vascular system to tissue and muscle Blood and blood vessel transport and direct O 2 and CO 2 to and from lungs, heart and body Takes in 0 2 and gets rid of CO 2

TASK Using the labels below, try and label the heart Right atrium Right ventricle Left atrium Left ventricle Tricuspid valve Bicuspid valve Pulmonary artery Pulmonary vein Aorta Pulmonary valve Vena cava Aortic valve

Right ventricle Right atrium Tricuspid valve Pulmonary vein Aorta Pulmonary artery Left atrium Left ventricle Aortic valve Bicuspid valve Vena cava

The heart acts as a dual pump- distributing blood around the body Atria work at LOW pressure chambers, collect and store the blood BEFORE pumping it into the Ventricle Walls of the atria are thin compared to the ventricles

Ventricles work at HIGH PRESSURE Ventricles generate force to pump blood around the body. Muscular walls are thick

Heart Valves Control the forward direction of blood flow Prevent back flow of blood

Tricuspid/bicuspid valves- separate the atria and ventricles Pulmonary valve- right ventricle to pulmonary artery Aorta valve- left ventricle and aorta

Blood flow around the heart RIGHT SIDE DEOXYGENATED BLOOD OXYGENATED BLOOD LEFT SIDE

Deoxygenated blood returns to your heart from your body (tissues/muscles) and flows into the right atrium. Vena cava Flows through the tricuspid valve into the right ventricle

Right ventricle pumps blood through the pulmonary valve. Blood goes through the pulmonary artery to the lungs

Gaseous exchange takes place Red blood cells collect O2

Oxygenated blood flows through pulmonary vein Left atrium Through the bicuspid valve into the left ventricle

Aortic valve to the aorta Blood is transported around the body

Card Sort In pairs you have 2 minutes to put the cards in the correct order that the blood flows through the heart.

Trinominos! In small groups complete the set of trinomino cards! Remember you need to find three words that relate to the Bold key term
