2 WORD POWER Denotation (Denotative) – The meaning of a word likely to appear in a dictionary. No emotional connections. Connotation (Connotation) – The additional emotional meaning a word carries with it. It goes beyond its base meaning. Feelings are associated and personal connections. It can be either positive or negative. Positive feelings – happy, joy, interest, hope, gratitude, surprise, confidence, enthusiasm. Pride, contentment, awe Negative feelings – anger, frustration, anxiousness, sadness, terrible, fearful, shocked, guilty, lonely,

3 CONNOTATIVE MEANING A word’s connotative meaning, or the emotional feelings or reactions that it produces, are separate from its dictionary definition. A connotative meaning can sometimes be tricky to figure out. A words connotative meaning can be negative or positive. Relaxed – positive lazy – negative We sometimes create euphemisms (softer way to say something negative) to avoid ill feelings. Examples – Passed away, correctional facility, put to sleep, big-boned, rest room, break wind, sanitation engineer,
