4. S.Green 2002 The nineteenth century saw a change in leisure. It was an age of new sports and entertainments, such as the music hall. And in the middle of the century, people discovered a new source of pleasure which was completely free. It was the seaside. Bathing in the sea had amused the rich in the 18 th century. In Victorian times, railways now took poorer people there to join in the fun. Seaside towns, such as Blackpool, Brighton and Southend, began to attract day trippers in their thousands.

6. S.Green 2002 By 1900 people were not just spending a day at the seaside. The middle and even the working classes were having a week’s holiday. Boarding houses were built for them to stay in; piers and promenades were built for their amusement. Holidays were here to stay.
