3 You have all read holiday brochures. Today you will make notes using this slideshow on seaside resorts and leisure. You must prepare a full page advert for a travel brochure about Brighton as a holiday resort in the nineteenth century.

4 S.Green 2002 The nineteenth century saw a change in leisure. It was an age of new sports and entertainments, such as the music hall. And in the middle of the century, people discovered a new source of pleasure which was completely free. It was the seaside. Bathing in the sea had amused the rich in the 18 th century. In Victorian times, railways now took poorer people there to join in the fun. Seaside towns, such as Blackpool, Brighton and Southend, began to attract day trippers in their thousands.

5 S.Green 2002 Activities available at the Seaside Croquet became a popular seaside game in the 1860s. Playing on the sands. Piers and Promenades.

6 S.Green 2002 By 1900 people were not just spending a day at the seaside. The middle and even the working classes were having a week’s holiday. Boarding houses were built for them to stay in; piers and promenades were built for their amusement. Holidays were here to stay.

8 S.Green 2002 Bathing Machines Bathing machines very popular Attitudes to nudity Queen Victoria had one ‘Dippers’ for ladies and ‘bathers’ for gents Machines provided jobs for fishermen

9 S.Green 2002 More on Bathing By 1790 there were 20 machines in the sea near Brighton Locals soon realised lodgings would be needed New villas built Other entertainments followed e.g. Balls in the Assembly Rooms Brighton Race Course 1774

11 S.Green 2002 More on Piers Pleasure steamers went from the end of piers e.g. Llandudno Pier and Blackpool Llandudno Pier opened 1878 Fishing off the Pier Penny Arcades on the Pier

12 S.Green 2002 You are writing an insert for a travel brochure on a seaside resort during the nineteenth century – you choose which one. Include the following: details about accommodation; details about leisure activities; how popular it is – sell the place.
