2 Presentation Objectives Describe how Nova Scotia is coming together to address the issue of smoking during pregnancy Discuss some of our learnings from that process

4 Background Motivated by Expecting to Quit In 2005 25% of women in NS were smoking during pregnancy 50% relapse rate within 1 year of pregnancy 3 year Health Canada funding $80 k.

5 Project Goal to build capacity and generate action around a best practice approach to pregnancy and tobacco

7 What we did (1)…. Engaged community  Needs assessment – conversations - buzz! Developed foundation of expertise  Lit review – relationships with experts Built interest, awareness and skills  Multiple methods - 160 people trained

8 What we did (2)…. Researched and adapted tools  Windsor Guide – wipeboard Engaged partners from outside DHA  SSA Advisory Committee – tobacco control community – Pregnets – AWARE (STARSS) Involved the Province  Health Promotion & Protection - Reproductive Care Program

9 Created a community of practice  Involving all 9 districts –listserve (www.ptsn.ca) Got senior-management onside & inspired Shared our learnings  List-serve, conferences, website, articles Found a way to support FRC’s in their work with women who smoke What we did (3)….
