 Chapter 9 Changes To Earth’s Surface By Adam, Lucille, and Kylie

Lesson 1 How Does Earth’s Surface Wear Away  Weathering is the process when Earth’s crust is slowly broken down.  Physical Weathering is when the size of the rock is changed.  Chemical Weathering is when the rock is broken into smaller pieces.

Interesting Information LLandforms can be different sizes and shapes. SSome landforms shape quickly while others form over a long time. TTemperature changes to the rock’s surface may also cause weathering.

Lesson 2 How Do Weathered Materials Move  Water, ice, gravity, and wind can work together to move weathered pieces of rock. This process is called erosion.  Deposition is the laying down of pieces of rock.  Wind can carry only small particles.

Interesting Information  Ice glaciers have covered parts of Earth’s surface for millions of years.  In cold areas, an avalanche is the name for large amounts of snow and ice that fall rapidly down a mountain.

Lesson 3 How Can Earth’s Surface Change Rapidly  A volcano forms at a weak spot in the Earth’s crust, where magma is forced upward and reaches the surface.  A fault is a crack in rocks where Earth’s crust can move.

Lesson 3 Continued…  Earthquakes often cause major rapid changes to Earth’s surface.  The point on Earth’s surface that is directly above the focus is the epicenter.
