Oct 8-9 – Lit – Act I Scene 3 Agenda: Quick-Write: Hamlet’s 1 st Soliloquy Family Relationships Polonius's advice Improvising I:iii I:iii on film Homework: ONE journal entry for BOTH act I:iv and I:v I will be checking the first four journal entries on Thursday Take out: Pen/Pencil Notebook Act I Soliloquy Homework Goals: Improvise a scene Use language clues to explain the relationships between characters

Quick-Write You have just been given a copy of Hamlet’s first soliloquy, and the following question. Write a thesis in response to the question and then pen a brief outline as if you were going to write an essay: How does the speaker use elements of language to convey a specific message?

I:ii – Hamlet’s 1 st Soliloquy What is Hamlet saying? Where does he juxtapose the mortal and eternal? What does this show you about his mentality? His beliefs? Through diction/language cues what do we learn about: His mother? His uncle? His father? His life?

Family Relationships Family Relationships: Describe the relationship between each of the following sets of characters. For each pair, answer the following prompts: Describe the relationship. What does each person want regarding the other? How do they treat each other? What words/language is indicative of their feelings for the other? Laertes and Ophelia Polonius and Laertes Polonius and Ophelia

Advice from Polonius: Polonius bids his son farewell with a long list of pieces of advice/wisdom. Following the prompts to the right, consider his diction and language cues, and answer the questions that follow. What sort of advice is he giving his son? Summarize his statements: Identify his use of the word “but”. What effect do they have? Identify specific diction that shows you something about Polonius. What can you infer about his beliefs, philosophy and values based on the words that he uses?

Improvisation In your group of three, you will have ten minutes to prepare a contemporary improvisation of I:iii. I’m not looking for perfection; I’m just looking for you to capture the essence of the interactions – using modern-language – between Polonius, Laertes and Ophelia. Keep in mind that this should NOT be a direct “No Fear”-style translation of the script, but a modern interpretation of it. Think about what’s happening: A brother is giving advice to his sister, a father is giving advice to his son before he leaves, and then scolding his daughter for her romantic choices… think about how these things would make you feel, and what emotions that Shakespeare might be attempting to convey to the audience. Write your improvised script on a separate sheet of paper.
