1 Biology Classroom Design By Cara Schildmeyer, Louis Hesse, Rachael Botsford, and Jacob Latorre Period 10

2 Mechanicals HVAC- Chemically filterable HVAC system that can close to keep hazardous materials from getting into the classroom. This special HVAC system will also be able to pull contaminated air out of the room and dispel it outside. Plumbing- The floor will have one way water drains to ensure to that sewage does not overflow and back up into the room. Or room will also have chemical spill showers. Lighting- Unique low shadow lighting will make the atmosphere of the room better for learning. Electric- Their will be electric and ethernet cable plug in ports on the floors around the room. Data- Two wall mounted routers that are fairly close to the wall so that they take up less room.

4 Materials: Flooring In our Biology room, we we will have hospital grade laminate flooring This material ensure that if chemicals or biological hazards are spilled on the floor they can be cleaned easily with little or no chance of contaminants being left behind because laminate flooring does not of cracks like tiles or hardwood

5 Materials: Walls Our walls in our biology room will be multi layered consisting of Concrete sheeting, Plasterboard, and Fiberglass insulation The plaster board is good insulation for sound and is also able to be drilled into for further modifications to the room The Concrete sheeting is also a good insulator for sound and heat. The concrete board also used as a supporting material for the plaster board The Fiberglass insulation is a very good insulator for heat

6 Material: Ceiling Our biology room ceiling will be made out of Vinyl faced gypsum the same material used in hospital ceilings We chose this material because it is very durable, easy to clean, and it is a good insulator for heat and sound

7 Materials: Storage Storage is very important in any classroom. Being able to store and organize you classroom materials make it easier for the classroom to function and flow. In this particular room, we added almost a whole wall of shelving in one side of the classroom and further cabinets and shelving in the back nook of the classroom

8 Materials: Lab Surfaces Lab tables and long storage cabinets are made of epoxy resin to allow for maximum durability and strength Protects against damage from substances and chemicals

9 Materials: Windows/Coverings Two windows near the lab stations and safety showers to allow for increased lighting and ventilation Each window has a square hatch that opens at the top

10 Productivity Students to Students Teachers to Students Experts to Students/Teachers School to Community Technologies

11 Productivity: Students to Students Students can effectively communicate through material content with partner interactions, as the lecture tables are set up in pairs Students can work together to produce experimental results in lab pairs using one wing of a tri-lab bench Student pairs can consult other lab pairs in their tri-lab group if they have questions or need an experimental model to follow if they are unsure of what their next step is

12 Productivity: Teachers to Students Teacher desk is facing that whole classroom, allowing for an overview of each student to ensure maximum work ethic and productivity Teachers and students connect through the use of the SMARTboard and basic whiteboard Allows the teacher to demonstrate concepts to students, and for students to actively engage in discussion or interaction by drawing on the SMARTboard or whiteboard

13 Productivity: Experts to Students/Teachers Access to high-speed wifi that is wired into the classroom allows students and teachers to connect with experts in the biology field These experts (professionals in science-related careers that apply biological concepts on a regular basis) are contacted prior to the school year and matched with each class They provide periodic sessions and give information to the students throughout the year SMARTboard can project information sessions with experts through technology tools like Skype

14 Productivity: School to Community Better educations and education environments directly impact communities When students have the opportunity for better their learning, it can directly affect them and the community because when these students go through life they are opened to many more pathways due to education given to them Ex.: More connections with professionals through technology These opened doorways affect the community to because when these students grow up they can help push the boundaries of modern technology and science

15 Productivity: Technologies The Technology helps the Students better understand the materials they are given Some examples of this in our room are: The ability to share example over the projector Ease of internet access with two routers The teacher's computer will receive an upgrade so you're not always waiting for a document or an online example to load

17 Work Spaces: Tools Includes a combination of technology and necessary lab materials (some of which are not pictured, as they would be stored in the long cabinets) Technology tools include the SMARTboard, whiteboard, and the teachers’ desk monitor screens Lab materials include the 12 high power microscopes, which are pictured Lab materials that are not pictured include measuring tools, such as beakers, pipettes, test tube racks, funnels, graduated cylinders, and Petri dishes Also includes lab specimen, such as bacteria, plants, and different cell types Experimental chemicals used for analyzing specimen growth

18 Work Spaces: Space Classroom is separated into three key areas Lecture space: Where the “textbook” material is learned and the teacher introduces concepts to the students Includes the teacher’s desk, the students’ desks and chairs, and the SMART board Lab space: Where the “textbook” material can be applied by the students in a hands-on environment Includes the four lab benches and microscopes, the long row of cabinets and sinks, and the fish tank Storage and safety space: The extended portion of the room where materials that are used later in the year can be stored Includes the safety shower and smaller cabinets

19 Work Spaces: Furniture One large wraparound teacher desk with a quad monitor Paired with a rolling office chair For the students: 12 wooden tabletops to be shared by 2 students each 24 rolling office chairs (slightly smaller than the teacher’s chair) Four tri-lab benches: Each lab bench as three wings, each wind can serve for one lab partner pair One sink per lab bench Long cabinet system near the lab benches for experimental material storage Fish tank attached; can be used to observe biological specimens Safety shower in storage area Smaller cabinet system in storage are for materials not in immediate use

20 Work Spaces: Technology The front of the room is a very important hub for sharing information At the top right of this picture you will see a ceiling mounted projector These are more practical than projector carts as they take up less room and have less visible wires. The next the next thing that you will see is the white board that can also double as a projector screen This is helpful since you can write on the board as well as project things The final thing is The teacher's desk with quad monitors This will provide an easier setup and will be faster than their current laptops
