 Chernobyl is a man made power plant. This power plant was a nuclear disaster.  On April 26,1986, Reactor #4 at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant discharged.

 In the year 2000 about 4000 cases of thyroid cancer had been diagnosed in exposed children. Nine deaths are attributed to radiation. There was a huge increase in thyroid cancers detected suggests that some of it at least is an artifact of the screening process. Thyroid cancer is not fatal if diagnosed and treated as soon as possible.

 The accident happened at one in the morning while the neighboring town of Pripyat slept. Four workers were killed instantly. Almost two days later, the residents of Pripyat were ordered to evacuate, and most never returned.

 The Chernobyl power plant lies in northern Ukraine, near the border with Belarus. Both countries border Poland to the west and Russia to the east. In the former Soviet Union, Belarus and Ukraine were the two westernmost states.

 the United Nations and its partners sought ways to provide emergency support, which included assessing the nuclear safety and environmental conditions of the contaminated area, and diagnose the various medical conditions that resulted from the accident
