W HAT IS ACTIVE PARTICIPATION Consistently engaging the minds of all learners with what is being learned Occupying the attention of all learners at all times

T HE I MPORTANCE OF A CTIVE PARTICIPATION Contributes to the rate of learning and the degree of learning Requires more involvement of the brain Provides teachers the opportunity to assess student learning

C LASSROOM PRACTICES PROMOTING ACTIVE PARTICIPATION Room Arrangement Arrange room allowing all students the opportunity to be actively engaged (e.g. horsehoe) Effective partner talks Plan for partner talks providing the opportunity for all partners to be actively engaged Consider how to partner on-level, below-level, and advanced students (e.g. partnering below-levels together may not be effective). Consider personalities (e.g. partnering students that are very quite together may not be effective) Consider assignments for partner talks - Provide higher-order questioning - Provide each partner with an opportunity to respond (e.g.Partner A, Partner B) Consider places in the reading program partner talks can be done effectively.

Put the word in selection context 2. Tell the student a friendly definition. Review the meaning by using an ask-back to say the word again. 3. Say the word again. 4. Students interact with the word To assess student learning, ask students to look at the word and call on a student to say a word allowing each student to be actively engaged since they do not know who will be called upon. C LASSROOM PRACTICES PROMOTING ACTIVE PARTICIPATION (C ONT ’ D ) Varied Responses - Whisper reading allows the teacher the opportunity to drop in a listen to student reading - Echo reading provides opportunity for students to get familiar with text to improve accuracy and allows students to track as teacher reads. - Choral reading improves automaticity. - Partner reading provides teacher time to drop in and listen to students and allows partner to correct each other.

A CTIVE PARTICIPATION TECHNIQUES Equity sticks Use popsicle sticks to call on students allowing each student the opportunity to respond. One Minute Paper Give each student a blank sheet of paper and pose a question for them to respond to allowing one minute for students to write their response. Pair students to share their responses. Fish Bowl Provide a fish bowl and give students index cards during small group instruction to write questions regarding any misunderstanding they may have from discussion. Prepare responses to questions and discuss them the next day in groups.

“T HINK T IME ” Before calling on a student to read a word or answer a question, point to the word or give the question and give students think time. This allows all students to be actively engaged instead of calling on a student first and other students not paying attention. Give a very brief think time before giving corrective feedback when students need help.

W HEN TO USE ACTIVE PARTICIPATION All day to engage every student in learning. During Tier I to promote student learning and to assess their understanding of high-frequency words, vocabulary words, and phonics skills being taught. During Tier II to assess mastery of skills. Use handout to determine skill mastery and Tier II lesson for the following day.

A CTIVE PARTICIPATION ASSISTANCE I will: model a lesson for an individual or set up to model for a grade level side by side teach with anyone who needs me to. begin scheduling times to plan a lesson with each of you to determine what active participation techniques to use that may work best for you and your students. follow-up with each of you to assist with any questions/concerns you may have.
