Universal Design for Learning (UDL)

What is UDL?  “UDL is a research-based framework for designing curricula—that is, educational goals, methods, materials, and assessments—that enable all individuals to gain knowledge, skills, and enthusiasm for learning. This is accomplished by simultaneously providing rich supports for learning and reducing barriers to the curriculum, while maintaining high achievement for all students.” (CAST)

The 3 Principles  1. Provide Multiple Means of Representation  Resourceful, knowledgeable learners  2. Provide Multiple Means of Action and Expression  Strategic, goal-directed learners  3. Provide Multiple Means of Engagement  Purposeful, motivated learners

Principle 1: Representing Information  Examples and Counter-examples  Emphasize important information  Auditory, text, digital, digital, video  Use various formats  Support background knowledge  Connect current knowledge to new patterns, link knowledge to other information, reflect on experience

Principle 2: Actions and Expression  Modeling  In different contexts and with different types of media  Practice with Supports  Constant, Constructive Feedback  Flexibility in Demonstrating Skills

Principle 3: Engagement  Choice of Content  Set Appropriate Level of Challenge  Choice of Rewards  Choice of Context
