THE ZIGGURAT OF UR Unit 3, lesson 6 - A Ziggurat to the Gods

ZIGGURAT - a stair-stepped temple The temples were made of mud-bricks. Inside each ziggurat was a place for a statue of the god and a place for the priest to bring the offerings. Sumerians believed the gods lived in the temples. The people believed the gods communicates their wishes to the priests in the ziggurat.

Built around 2100 BC 3. Who was allowed to climb the staircase to the ziggurats? Only honored priests 4. What was built on either side of the center staircase to make it stronger? buttresses

5. What materials did the people of Ur use to make the ziggurat? They made the core of sun-dried mud bricks and the exterior of baked bricks. 6. What two features kept the ziggurat dry? Weeper holes and vertical drains 7. What do archaeologist believe was on the highest level of the ziggurat? They believed the temple was on the highest terrace.
