How to Navigate a Set of Field Notes….

First the Jargon… Benchmark Backsight Foresight Height of Instrument Elevation Turning Point Station

Benchmark A Point of known or given Elevation

Backsight A rod Reading at a Benchmark

Foresight A rod reading at a point of unknown elevation

Height of Instrument The vertical distant from the ground to the level or laser. Calculated by adding the rod reading at a Backsight to the Benchmark elevation Height of Instrument

Elevation Vertical distance of a point from sea level. Calculated by subtracting the rod reading at a foresight from the Height of Instrument

Turning Point Occurs when the Surveyor’s Level is moved, thus requiring a new height of instrument to be calculated

Station Point where rod readings are taken

Field Notes Simple table to take accurate notation of rod readings. Allows for simple calculations of elevation
