Participation in Math Class: The Effect on Student Achievement By: Nicolas Millet

Purpose Do students who participate the most during math class achieve the highest grades?

Method Monitored and recorded participation Monitored and recorded participation – High Level = over 50 attempts – Moderate Level = attempts – Low Level = 0-19 attempts Average of last four math assessments Average of last four math assessments – “Achieving” = 80% or above – “Progressing” = below 80% Interest survey Interest survey – Do you feel you are “good” at math? – Do you like to participate in math class?

Results Participation and Achievement High Level High Level – 6 students(4 Achieving) Moderate Level Moderate Level – 11 students(6 Achieving) Low Level Low Level – 9 students(2 Achieving)

Interest Survey 85% of students feel they are “good” at math. 85% of students feel they are “good” at math. – 46% are categorized as achieving 88% of students say they enjoy participating in math class. 88% of students say they enjoy participating in math class. – 65% participate at Moderate Level – 23% participate at High level

Conclusion Students who participate more in class do seem to achieve higher test scores in math. Students who participate more in class do seem to achieve higher test scores in math.
