Curriculum of Practice DISCIPLINARIAN. Anthropologist. One who is an expert or specialist in the study of anthropology DISCIPLINE. Anthropology. The study of the political, social, and cultural development of people JOB DESCRIPTION. As an anthropologist, I am concerned about the habits, work, and beliefs of people within a culture. I examine the books, and art they create, the tools they use to do their work, and the religion they practice. I also interview and observe them.

Curriculum of Practice DISCIPLINARIAN. Ecologist. One who specializes in the study of the environment DISCIPLINE. Ecology. The study of the use and conservation of an environment JOB DESCRIPTION. As an ecologist, I am concerned about _____________________________. I examine _____________________.

Problem The curator at the Museum of Cultures is trying to organize an exhibition of objects from different cultures. The objects or artifacts must be placed in the environment in which they were used by the culture: forest, desert, plains, and ocean. What evidence is needed to sort these objects correctly into the environments? How does an examination of an artifact yield evidence about the culture? * Materials * Purpose * Technology * Time * Weather

Curriculum of Practice Desert, Forest, Ocean, Plains?. 1.As an anthropologist, what attributes of the artifact do you notice reveal where it was used? 2.As an anthropologist, where do you think the artifact was made and used? 3.As an ecologist, what do you think is the relationship among the artifact, the culture, and the environment? 4.As an anthropologist and ecologist, in which environment was the artifact most likely to be used?

Curriculum of Practice Why does the information from the study of anthropology and ecology help solve the problem posed by the curator?.

True or False? DNA controls the physical make-up of all living things.

True or False? DNA is passed from generation to generation by the processes of meiosis and fertilization.

True or False? The genetic code of an offspring is a combination of both parents’ DNA.

True or False? Given sufficient amounts of time and influences by the environment, changes occur.

True or False? Changes in DNA occur through random mutations.

True or False? Mutations cause differences in genes (alleles) and allow for variations of individuals within a species.

True or False? Living things produce more offspring than can survive.

True or False? The individuals with favorable variations survive in a particular environment and will survive long enough to possibly pass on the advantageous traits to their offspring.

Core Curriculum Copy the statements below on a piece of paper in your notebook. After each, write or draw your interpretation of what was said. DNA controls the physical make-up of all living things. Charles Darwin and the Galapagos Islands Charles Darwin was a naturalist who boarded the HMS Beagle from 1831 – 1836 to travel around the world. He spent 5 weeks on the Galapagos Islands off of South America. In 1859, he published On the Origin of Species to explain his thoughts on the theory of evolution and his views on the process of natural selection.

Core Curriculum Survival of a species is dependent upon the adaptations of structures, functions, or behaviors.

Evidence for Evolution

Synthesize your own conclusion Investigate the image below.

Points in your notes The mechanisms through which evolution takes place are a related set of processes that include mutation, adaptation, natural selection, and extinction. This results in changes in populations of organisms over time. A mutation may result in a favorable change or adaptation in genetic information that improves a species’ ability to exit in its environment, or a mutation may result in an unfavorable change. Evolution is a change in a species over time. This occurs through natural selection.

Points in your notes Natural selection: the structural, functional, or behavioral variations (adaptations) within a species that are beneficial or not detrimental are able to survive and reproduce. (allowing them to pass on their genes) Evidence for evolution includes the fossil record, radiometric dating, DNA, and similarities between species. If a species does not have enough variations that allow them to survive and reproduce, they can become extinct. Charles Darwin is known as the “Father of Evolution”.

Process Log Entry “Adaptation is necessary for survival.” (Describe how changes in the environment can bring about changes in species (adaptation, extinction) through natural selection.)
