Editing This is the second of the 4 technical areas we are covering. You will need to learn all the editing techniques, cuts and other transitions. You will have to identify them in a clip Consider why they have been used & write about how they construct representations. Lesson 1/4

Editing From the very early days images were recorded on to film which was then played in a projector. These days most of the editing we do is with hard drives on cameras, software and computers.

Editing Most of the terms that we use still hark back to the days when editing was a manual process.

A little boy is playing with a helicopter toy in his front garden. The boy breaks his helicopter and immediately looks for something else to play with. The little boy finds a ball and starts bouncing it around against his garden fence. The boy’s ball bounces over the garden fence and into the street outside. The boy chases the ball over his garden fence and runs out into the street The boy grabs the ball in the middle of the street and turns to see the car facing him. Boy and ball story

A married couple are having an argument about the amount of time he’s been spending at the pub instead of at home. They row and the argument gets louder and louder. The woman tries to grab the car keys and the man snatched them back. The woman runs upstairs to find her spare keys to the car. She slips out of the back door and starts the car. The car screams away down the street at a ridiculously high speed, with the woman clearly upset at the wheel. Married couple argument story

Editing systems Continuity When a sequence is completely continuous from the start to the finish. Non-continuity systems When a director intersperses their footage from different pieces of film. Editing

Here are two sets of six boards for you to draw pictures in. Set yourself up two sequences that you might find in a soap and experiment with continuity and non-continuity systems.

Your photostory What decisions did you make when editing your photostory after the camerawork lessons? List them in your notes, along with the reasons why you decided on them. Editing

Back to Rome! Let’s look again at a clip you’ve seen already. What do you notice about the sequencing of the footage that adds to your understanding of what’s going on? Editing
