Mission Statement On September 5, 1980, Mothers Against Drunk Drivers (MADD) was incorporated and the mission as stated in its Articles of Incorporation were “To aid the victims of crimes performed by individuals driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, to aid the families of such victims and to increase public awareness of the problem of drinking and drugged driving." In 2015, MADD's efforts to significantly reduce drunk driving through the Campaign to Eliminate Drunk Driving as well as interest in defining it's role in the fight against drugged driving, the Board of Directors revised it's mission to reflect those priorities to, “The mission of Mothers Against Drunk Driving is to end drunk driving, help fight drugged driving, support the victims of these violent crimes and prevent underage drinking.”

History From its humble beginnings 35 years ago, MADD has evolved into one of the most influential and widely supported non-profit organizations in America. Learn about how MADD first started, the history of our fight against drunk driving and some of our victories along the way. Founded by a mother whose daughter was killed by a drunk driver, Mothers Against Drunk Driving® (MADD) is the nation’s largest non-profit working to protect families from drunk driving, drugged driving and underage drinking. MADD also supports drunk and drugged driving victims and survivors at no charge through local MADD victim advocates and the 24-Hour Victim Helpline MADD-HELP.

Type

Membership Primarily grassroots and volunteer driven, MADD has over 600 state organizations, chapters, and community action teams in each of the 50 states as well as affiliates in Guam, Puerto Rico and Canada. MADD consists of over three million members and supporters nationwide As a single-issue interest group, Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) was formed by a mother whose teenaged daughter was killed by a drunk driver. The organization now lobbies heavily to stop drunk driving as well as supporting the victims of drunk driving and preventing underage drinking.
