Today’s Schedule FINAL EXAM REVIEW!

Final Exam The Final Exam will be Monday, June 11, at 4:00 PM. In room : Class 1 and Class 2 In room : Class 3 and Class 4

Final Exam Details The exam will have 5 parts: 1) 3 reading passages with questions 2) Reading skill questions 3) Word Pretest 4) Idioms 5) Analogies

The style of the exam… This exam has some multiple choice questions, but also some writing parts, where you will write sentences. 50 questions total

Reading Passages 3 passages (not from the book): 20 questions total, a mix of choose the best answer, and some writing questions, identifying information from the passage.

Reading Skill Questions 5 Reading skill questions - choose the best answer. Know the basic facts of Skimming, Scanning, and Drawing Inferences.

Reading Skill: Skimming Skimming is reading for the general idea or the big picture. 6 practical steps for skimming: 1) Read the title. 2) Note the author’s name and the source. 3) Read the first paragraph completely. 4) Read subheadings and first sentences of remaining paragraphs. 5) Look for main ideas, clue words, direction words, and numbers. 6) Read the final paragraph completely.

Reading Skill: Scanning What is scanning? - Scanning is looking for the exact answer to a specific question. What is the difference between skimming and scanning? - Skimming looks for the general idea while scanning looks for one thing in particular. - A key word for skimming is “general”, and a key word for scanning is “specific.”

Reading Skill: Scanning How to scan: - Let your eyes run rapidly over several lines at a time, looking for a specific fact or idea. When you are scanning a text with questions, you read the questions first and then scan the text for the answers, using key words.

Reading Skill: Drawing Inferences Inference: an idea that is not stated openly, but is intended to be understood anyway. Difference between implications and inferences: - implications: conclusions suggested by the writer or speaker. - inferences: conclusions drawn by the reader or hearer. Drawing inferences is also called “reading between the lines”. A key word for drawing inferences is “purpose”, as we are trying to find the purpose of the author.

Reading Skill: Drawing Inferences Drawing inferences is based on: 1) correct literal comprehension of the words - literal: basic, usual meaning 2) careful interpretation of the literal meaning - interpretation: explanation An inference is not a “blind guess”, but an “educated guess”, based on what the author has stated. A trained reader tries to “get inside the head” of the author by determining what it is that the author intends him to infer before he draws inferences.

Drawing Inferences Look at p. 210, line 71, about Celebrities. “Besides the huge media machine in which I am but a cog, …” (a cog= small piece of a large machine) What is the author implying in this sentence?  About the system of media?  About herself in that system?  Is it a positive or negative implication?  If this is true, what implications does this have for our relationship to the media?

Word Pretest For some Word Pretest words, you will write them in a new sentence. For others, choose the best answer. Be careful with this part, because the correct answer may not be the same as the answer in the book. The words will be taken from Units 10, 12, 14, 15, 16, 17.

Idioms Idiom questions will be a mix of: - Use the idiom in an original sentence - Choose the best answer Study the idioms from Units 10, 12, 14, 15, 16, 17.

Final Exam Reminders Bring your student ID card to the final exam. You should line up in the hallway in order of student number. You do not need to bring your bags. Please do not miss the final exam. Cheating of any kind will result in a grade of 0. After the exam, do not wait in the halls. You can wait for your friends somewhere else.
