Today’s Activity Solving Multi-Step Equations

Instructions You should have a baggie of colored strips. Using the strips provided, have each person of your group construct one of the shapes described. Then have the person construct an equation representing the perimeter. The value of each strip is given in terms of a variable and a number. Using this information, have each person come up with and solve the equation for the perimeter of the shape. Compare your answers for the variable and check each other’s work.

Example 1) A seven sided polygon using 1 orange, 2 yellow, 2 green, and 2 blue. The perimeter is 90. Orange = 7x – 3 Yellow = 4x + 3 Green = -2x + 18 Blue = 4x – 3

Example 1) A seven sided polygon using 1 orange, 2 yellow, 2 green, and 2 blue. The perimeter is 90. Orange = 7x – 3 Yellow = 4x + 3 Green = -2x + 18 Blue = 4x – 3

Example 1 orange + 2 yellow + 2 green + 2 blue = 90 Orange = 7x – 3 Yellow = 4x + 3 Green = -2x + 18 Blue = 4x – 3

Example 1 orange + 2 yellow + 2 green + 2 blue = 90 (7x – 3) + 2(4x + 3) + 2(-2x + 18) + 2(4x – 3)= 90 Orange = 7x – 3 Yellow = 4x + 3 Green = -2x + 18 Blue = 4x – 3

Example 1 orange + 2 yellow + 2 green + 2 blue = 90 (7x – 3) + 2(4x + 3) + 2(-2x + 18) + 2(4x – 3)= 90 7x – 3 + 8x + 6 – 4x x – 6 = 90

Example 1 orange + 2 yellow + 2 green + 2 blue = 90 (7x – 3) + 2(4x + 3) + 2(-2x + 18) + 2(4x – 3)= 90 7x – 3 + 8x + 6 – 4x x – 6 = 90 7x + 8x – 4x + 8x – – 6 = 90

Example 1 orange + 2 yellow + 2 green + 2 blue = 90 (7x – 3) + 2(4x + 3) + 2(-2x + 18) + 2(4x – 3)= 90 7x – 3 + 8x + 6 – 4x x – 6 = 90 7x + 8x – 4x + 8x – – 6 = 90 19x +33 = 90

Example 1 orange + 2 yellow + 2 green + 2 blue = 90 (7x – 3) + 2(4x + 3) + 2(-2x + 18) + 2(4x – 3)= 90 7x – 3 + 8x + 6 – 4x x – 6 = 90 7x + 8x – 4x + 8x – – 6 = 90 19x +33 = 90 19x = 57

Example 1 orange + 2 yellow + 2 green + 2 blue = 90 (7x – 3) + 2(4x + 3) + 2(-2x + 18) + 2(4x – 3)= 90 7x – 3 + 8x + 6 – 4x x – 6 = 90 7x + 8x – 4x + 8x – – 6 = 90 19x +33 = 90 19x = 57 x = 3

Now it’s your turn! Be sure to have your group help you if you get stuck. Compare answers and finish filling out the sheet.

Round 1 A triangle using 1 blue, 1 green, and 1 yellow. The perimeter is 12. A square using 4 green. The perimeter is 16. A rectangle using 2 blue and 2 yellow. The perimeter is 16. A 5-sided polygon using the orange, 2 blue, and 2 yellow. The perimeter is 22. Blue = 2x + 1 Green = 5x – 1 Yellow = 3x + 2 Orange = 10x – 4

And what is x? x = 1

Round 1 # 2 A square using 4 green. The perimeter is 16. Blue = 2x + 1 Green = 5x – 1 Yellow = 3x + 2 Orange = 10x – 4

And what is x?

#10 Writing & Solving Multi-step Equations Homework for this evening. Let’s look it over!

1. The length of a rectangle is 4 times longer than the width. The perimeter is 30. What is the width? Solve each problem below on a separate sheet of paper using the steps shown above. Make sure to label each step and show all work. Then, do each problem in a different way. What is the equation for perimeter of a rectangle? 2 l + 2 w = p

1. The length of a rectangle is 4 times longer than the width. The perimeter is 30. What is the width? Can we write an equation for length using width? l = 4 w Now we substitute this in for l and p. 2(4 w ) + 2 w = w = 30 w = 3 What do we get?
