Presentation transcript:

Universal Design for Learning Creating Curb Cuts Creating Curb Cuts

Shifting Assumptions Students with disabilities fall along a continuum. Teacher adjustments for learner differences should occur for all students. Curriculum materials should be varied and diverse including digital and online resources. Curriculum should be made flexible.

Brain Research Neurological research has identified the following distributed networks: recognition strategic affective

In Short Recognition networks enable us to identify and understand information, ideas, and concepts. Strategic networks enable us to plan, execute, and monitor actions and skills. Affective networks enable us to engage with tasks and learning and with the world around us.

The Need for Flexible Media Traditional Media Speech Text Images

Universal Design for Access No two students learn the same way. Applying universal design to learning materials and activities can increase access for all learners, including those with disabilities.

Principles of UDL Principle 1: Recognition To support recognition learning, provide multiple, flexible methods of presentation Principle 2: Expression To support strategic learning, provide multiple, flexible methods of expression and apprenticeship. Principle 3: Engagement To support affective learning, provide multiple, flexible options for engagement.

Methods of Presentation Provide multiple examples Highlight critical features Provide multiple media and formats Support background context

Methods of Expressions and Apprenticeship Provide flexible models of skilled performance Provide opportunities to practice with supports Provide ongoing and relevant feedback Offer flexible opportunities for demonstrating skill

Options for Engagement Offer choices of content and tools Offer adjustable levels of challenge Offer choices of rewards Offer choices of learning context

In Short, UDL Supports varied instructional practices. Uses technology to support learners with diverse needs. Provides a proactive approach to curriculum development. Offers students multiple strategies to gain access to information and learning, interact with content, and demonstrate learning.
