Defining Words in Context SAT-Style The following are three different methods that you can use to prove you know the true meaning of a word. 1. Definition/Synonym 2. Opposition 3. Example

Definition/Synonym Sometimes the writer will save you the trouble of looking up a word by defining it for you with a full definition or simple synonym. Clue Words: for example, for instance, such as, like, or an appositive phrase, as … as Word: Affinity - means a natural liking for or attraction to a person, thing, idea, etc. His fondness for Dickens was not really as pronounced as his affinity for Shakespeare.

Opposition Another way to pick up the meaning of a new word or expression is by looking for clues that tell you what the word does NOT mean. Clue Words: but, except, however, unlike Word: Affinity - means a natural liking for or attraction to a person, thing, idea, etc. Jack’s sister hated having pets, unlike Jack who had a great affinity for cats and dogs.

Example The context of a word will sometimes give examples that will give you a pretty clear idea of the meaning. Clue Words: for example, for instance, such as, like Word: Affinity - means a natural liking for or attraction to a person, thing, idea, etc. Mr. Dye’s vast collection of White Stripes albums and paraphernalia revealed his affinity for the band.
