What mission was it a part of columbia shuttle space

 it’s purpose was to orbit the planet as a reused space shuttle

Space shuttle columbia blew up and killed all seven crew members

It blew up,over texas

The disaster happened after a piece of foam the size of a brief case broke off

 The space shuttle columbia flight was delayed for two years because of a similar accident (the challenger disaster)

 The main fuel tank has a foam outside made as an insulator, 2 in 82 seconds after the launch the foam piece broke the size of a briefcase3, the foam debris struck the left wing witch caused it to crash
