Discovering Cells

Microscope Invented around Simple Microscope-One Lens. Compound Microscope-More than one Lens.

Robert Hooke Robert Hooke looked at cork through microscope and named cells after tiny rooms.

Anton Van Leeuwenhoek Used simple Microscope to look at bacteria on teeth scrapings and one celled organisms in pond water he called animalcules. (1683)

The Cell Theory All living things are composed of cells. Cells are the basic unit of structure and function in living things. All cells are produced from other cells.

How a light microscope works. The lenses magnify an object by bending the light that passes through them. The center of the lens is thicker than the edges. A lens with this shape is a convex lens.

Compounding the image The second lens magnifies the image from the first lens. The total magnification of the microscope is equal to the magnification of the two lenses multiplied together. 4x times 10 x = 40x.

Resolution The ability to clearly distinguish the individual parts of an object.
