Lesson 1: What Are Organisms? OMM

Getting Started (GS) Introduction p.2 Instructions p.3 1. Five traits common to living things 2. Working definition for “organism”

Time to Share!  Each student team will share their lists of traits common to living things and a visible a master list will be compiled.  Each team will share their working definitions for the term “organism.” As a class we will decide on a single definition that can be a combination of the suggestions.

Question: What determines whether or not something is “living”? What determines whether or not something is “living”?

Procedure: See pg 4-5  Listen carefully for the instructions for Writing Roulette and join in creating the example.

Procedure: 2. Read aloud “What’s in an Organism’s Name?” according to the teacher’s instructions.

Procedure: #3-6 Name that Organism! Caution:  Use Greek OR Latin  Print organism name on back, top line of card

Caution:  Use the correct format for writing scientific names.  1 st word (genus) capitalized  2 nd word (species) lower case  Example: Homo sapiens
