Making Comparisons with Adjectives and Adverbs

Use the Positive or Base form of adjectives or adverbs when you make a statement. Tom is tall. Use the Comparative form of adjectives or adverbs when you compare a person or thing with one other person or thing. Tom is taller than Joe. Use the Superlative form of adjectives or adverbs when you compare someone or something with two or more other things. Tom is the tallest of all the men here.

For one-syllable adjectives and adverbs add –er to form comparative add –est to form superlative tall – taller – tallest soon – sooner - soonest

For some two-syllable adjectives use –er to form the comparative use – est to form the superlative easy – easier – easiest For some two-syllable adjectives and two- syllable adverbs use more for comparative use most for superlative cheerful – more cheerful – most cheerful brightly – more brightly – most brightly

For most three-syllable adjectives and adverbs use more to form comparative add most to form superlative powerful – more powerful – most powerful peacefully–more peacefully–most peacefully

Irregular adjectives and adverbs Some adjectives and adverbs form comparative and superlative forms in irregular ways. good – better - best
