Epistle of Jude November 10, 2013 Bob Eckel 1 Jude 4:1-4 -“Greetings, The Faith & Ungodly Persons 2” Jude 1:3 - Beloved, while I was making every effort to write you about our common salvation, I felt the necessity to write to you appealing that you contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all handed down to the saints. –As we provided substantial evidence for last week ‘the faith’ can be broadly interpreted as the: simple faith of the gospel set of teachings of the apostles and prophets that began before the apostle Paul –truth as exemplary of the faith »Frequently espoused by the Lord Jesus Christ other teachings of the apostles and prophets

Epistle of Jude November 10, 2013 Bob Eckel 2 Jude 4:1-4 -“Greetings, The Faith & Ungodly Persons 2” –Notice the intent of the faith which was once for all handed down to the saints –How many times? –To whom? Jude 1:4 - For certain persons have crept in unnoticed, those who were long beforehand marked out for this condemnation, ungodly persons who turn the grace of our God into licentiousness and deny our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ. –First of all note that here in Jude we are dealing with 2 classes of men. Beloved – loved by God – Jude 3, 17, 20

Epistle of Jude November 10, 2013 Bob Eckel 3 Jude 4:1-4 -“Greetings, The Faith & Ungodly Persons 2” tis – these certain others – Jude 4, 8, 10, 12, 16, 19 –Also notice the verse begins with For…. and this introduces why we should contend for the faith –This theme that continues through verse 16, and how to do this in verses –certain persons – exactly as stated, implying disparagement. –have crept in unnoticed only NT use to enter secretly, by stealth – basically unnoticed –II Pet 2:1 doesn’t this raise your suspicion? –who were long beforehand marked out Looks like it was planned long ago, and if so by whom?

Epistle of Jude November 10, 2013 Bob Eckel 4 Jude 4:1-4 -“Greetings, The Faith & Ungodly Persons 2” –This long ago phrase of modification refers to God Himself – Matt 11:21, Heb 1:1 –for this condemnation God knew this would occur, but keep in mind that condemnation relates to God’s judgment on this unbelief. Although this could be translated as pre-ordained, this result is still because these tis persons denied the Grace of God. –A better interpretation is temporal, the consequences of this denial. –ungodly persons destitute of reverential awe towards God condemning God –who turn the grace of our God into licentiousness This grace can be applied to ‘the faith’

Epistle of Jude November 10, 2013 Bob Eckel 5 Jude 4:1-4 -“Greetings, The Faith & Ungodly Persons 2” ‘our’ can be equally interpreted as ‘my’ licentiousness - unbridled lust, excess, lasciviousness, wantonness, outrageousness, shamelessness, insolence –Most often interpreted as sensuality – Mark 7:22, Rom 13:13, II Cor 12;21, Gal 6:19, Eph 4:19, I Pet 4:3, II Pet 2:2, 2:7, 2:16 »How would this interpretation be interpreted in context? »See verses 8 and 10 –and deny our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ. Notice our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ Master can be used for any master or specifically for the Lord Jesus Christ - II Tim 2:21, II Pet 2:1, Rev 6:10 Now deny – the emphasis of the verse –Not to accept, to reject, to refuse something offered –The Master and His doctrine, thus deserting His cause. »Matt 10:33, Luke 12:9, John 18:29, II Tim 2:12,13, II Pet 2:1,

Epistle of Jude November 10, 2013 Bob Eckel 6 Jude 4:1-4 -“Greetings, The Faith & Ungodly Persons 2” I John 2:22, 23; Rev 2:13, 3:8 »Titus 1:16, 17 - Unto the pure all things are pure: but unto them that are defiled and unbelieving is nothing pure; but even their mind and conscience is defiled. They profess that they know God; but in works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate. How much are we aware of these certain people today?
