 Can be found at the federal, state, or local level (New York and Los Angeles have their own)  The FBI has the largest crime lab in the world.  Other government organizations with their own lab include: ◦ DEA ◦ ATF ◦ U.S. Postal Service ◦ U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service

Most crime labs are divided as follows: - Physical science Unit -Examines drugs, soil, glass, paint, blood spatter, and other trace evidence using chemistry, geology, & physics - Firearms Unit -Examines tool marks, weapons, firearms & bullets - Document Analysis Unit -Examines handwriting, typewriting, word processing, computer applications, paper & ink - Biology Unit -Analyzes body fluids, DNA, blood factors, hair, fibers, bones & tissues, any biotic samples, and plant life.

 Some larger Crime Labs will have specialized units: Latent prints, arson, toxicology, photography  Some crime labs may also have specialist that work for them on occasion such as: entomologists, odontologists, or psychologist.  Tools: Ferro Camra for video, raw photographs with macro lens for very small things like fingerprints

 Use your Computer or BYOT to Go to Schoology and click on the folder Intro to 4N6.  First complete your Safety Contract  Then Find and open the document titled “Branches of Forensics and Types of Law”. You are given 10 definitions and a word bank, your job is to write down the correct vocabulary word for each one. I will check these when you are finished  THEN look at our Unit 1 Guide. Locate the Vocabulary words at the bottom. Complete your vocabulary. Turn the definition into a sentence.  Turn it in at the end of the period

 Objective: ◦ Complete the crime lab activity to get an understanding of what tools are in each division of a crime lab and how much those tools cost.  Warm-Up: ◦ What are the 4 divisions of a Crime lab

One Saturday morning Nina saw the three musketeers in the mall. Jenny, Brittany, and Mitzi called themselves by that name because they always were together. "I've been shopping for sandals," Jenny told Nina. "But I have such a wide foot nothing seems to fit. We've been looking everywhere." "And it's been slow going," Mitzi added. "On account of Brittany's-" "I know," Nina said looking at Brittany, "I heard you sprained your ankle in gym yesterday. Does it still hurt a lot?" "It's okay as long as I move really slowly," Brittany told her. "We're going to get ice cream at the Just Desserts Shop now. Want to join us?" "Better not,” Nina said, “ Max is meeting me at home. See you later." Source:

Nina was taking a short cut through Harborville's city park when she saw Mr. Hansen kneeling beside a new sidewalk. The city maintenance man frowned as she drew closer. "Somebody jumped right in the middle here while the cement was still wet," he said, pointing at two narrow footprints embedded in the concrete. "Now I'll have to rip out this section and re-do it. Sure can't leave the sidewalk looking like this!" "Any idea of who did it?" Nina asked. "A kid over there on the slide said that girls named Brittany, Mitzi, and Jenny were the only ones near here. But he doesn't know which one ruined my sidewalk." "I know who did it," Nina declared. How did Nina figure it out?

The footprints were narrow. Jenny had wide feet. Because of her sprained ankle, Brittany would not have jumped. Since Mitzi was the only one left, she had to be the guilty one.
