I © 2015 Bentley Systems, Incorporated Andrew Smith, Feb 2016 How BIM can positively influence rail O&M

I © 2015 Bentley Systems, Incorporated I 2 How BIM can positively influence rail O&M? Is this the correct question? What is the benefit of design and construction information being passed seamlessly to O&M using BIM processes? How can O&M be optimized by driving design and construction through BIM processes?

I © 2015 Bentley Systems, Incorporated I 4 Background BIM is all about alignment: –Aligning multiple asset disciplines to deliver the required system –Aligning multiple contractors to work together efficiently in a consistent way –Aligning information for all of the stages of the assets lifecycle to ensure the right information is available to the right person at the right time, without recreation or translation Sole purpose of design & construction is to enable the operation and maintenance of an asset Deliverables are the asset itself, and the information required to operate and maintain that asset … O&M will have to live with the asset for much longer than the design team will

I © 2015 Bentley Systems, Incorporated I 5 How BIM can positively influence rail O&M? During design: –Engaging with owner operators early in the asset lifecycle (AIR / EIR) –Assessing operability & maintainability early in design and construction –Clearer communication of design to users and maintainers during the design process During operation & maintenance: –Provide access to design intent and construction details for maintainers –Integrated, multi-discipline view of assets can assist with root cause analysis –Allows creation and maintenance of master asset register

I © 2015 Bentley Systems, Incorporated I 6 Engaging with owner operators early in the asset lifecycle (AIR / EIR) Clarity of the O&M targets provided to designers and constructors EIR & AIR – defining what we need to know about out physical assets in order to operate and maintain them

I © 2015 Bentley Systems, Incorporated I 7 Assessing operability & maintainability early in design and construction Clash detection Visualization

I © 2015 Bentley Systems, Incorporated I 8 Clearer communication of proposed design to users and maintainers during the design process Visualization / animation

I © 2015 Bentley Systems, Incorporated I 9 Provide access to design intent and construction details for maintainers Once asset is handed over to O&M, retaining access to what was conceived, what was done, and why it was done that way

I © 2015 Bentley Systems, Incorporated I 10 Integrated, multi-discipline view of assets can assist with root cause analysis During design, an integrated view of all assets is required to understand constructability and usability In O&M, an integrated multi discipline view is required to understand root causes of issues

I © 2015 Bentley Systems, Incorporated I 11 Supporting the creation and maintenance of a master asset register Major projects creating a new set of asset and handing them over to O&M Ensuring that when updates / enhancements are made, the master record for each asset is kept in step with the current state –Updates are critical – if a master asset definition is not up to date, then it can be actively detrimental and potentially dangerous –Out of date records reduce credibility of the solution, and may result in incorrect decisions being made

I © 2015 Bentley Systems, Incorporated I 12 Conclusions BIM process require early engagement with the O&M group Visualization of the integrated solution can help ensure that the O&M group are engaged and ensure that the design is maintainable Initial design, any subsequently designed infrastructure changes and any maintenance that changes the asset must all be reflected in the master record for the asset. –Keeping the virtual world in step with the real world is one of the key benefits of BIM to O&M Future: O&M best practice & lessons learned driving more design decisions
