Problem Solving with Right Triangles

Today’s Objectives  Use trigonometry to solve applied problems.  Apply inverse trigonometry.  Use problem solving skills.

Angles  Angle of elevation—the angle from the horizontal to your line of sight when you look up.  Angle of depression—the angle from the horizontal to your line of sight when you look down.

Example  The angle of elevation from a sailboat to the top of a 121-foot lighthouse on the shore measures 16 o. How far is the sailboat from the lighthouse?

Practice  Valery is flying a kite directly over her friend Fernando, who is 125 meters away. When she holds the kite string down to the ground, the string makes a 39 o angle with the level ground. How high is Valery’s kite?

Practice

Today’s Objectives  Use trigonometry to solve applied problems.  Apply inverse trigonometry.  Use problem solving skills.

Exit Slip  For the following problems, show your work and explain your reasoning. 1. Solve for a. 2. The angle of elevation from a ship to the top of a 42-meter lighthouse on the shore measures 33 o. How far is the ship from the lighthouse? (Assume the horizontal line of sight meets the bottom of the lighthouse.) a 17 cm 32 0
