1 Tozer points to our failure in Chapter 4 of The Pursuit of God. “To most people God is an inference, not a reality. He is a deduction from evidence which they consider adequate, but He remains personally unknown to the individual. … They go through life trying to love an ideal and be loyal to a mere principle.” What are we to do with statements like this? There are a number of considerations that we should all weigh before we move more deeply into this, so that we can apply the conclusions to our conscious minds.

2 Tozer points to our failure in Chapter 4 of The Pursuit of God. Before we delve into this, we should understand the full meaning of Tozer’s use of the word “inference” in his statement. To “infer” is to conclude from data, observations or facts what is not otherwise clearly stated. So Tozer is saying that most people “infer” there is a God, without experiencing Him as their reality.

3 With that in mind, let’s take from this valuable statement what God has for us in it. 1.What is the difference between a “deduction from evidence” concerning God, and what Tozer says I should have? 2.Have I taken my understanding of who and what God is from what others have said of Him, or even what the Bible says of Him, or am I allowing God Himself to personally reveal His nature and personality to me? 3.Have I settled for “loyalty to” God, or worse, “service to or for God” in the place of deep personal interaction with God? I know of many Christians who believe that the highest order of Christian existence is not even “loyalty to God” or “service for God” but a life quest of “elimination of sin”. Hmmm – I thought Jesus already did that.
