What growth can you see? What growth can’t you see?

Growth You Can See Rapid physical growth is part of the human life cycle until adulthood. How would you describe physical growth?

Intellectual Growth

PET Scan What kind of pictures do PET scans take?

PET Scan What observations can you make about the pictures of these brains?

What is a PET Scan? Name something that you know takes pictures of the inside of our body. – X-ray shows hard spots like bones – PET scan shows soft spots like brain Colors – Show what parts are working or resting Scientists – Study to see what areas of the brain are working hard

Intellectual Growth What kinds of things did you know when you were a toddler? What are some things you know now that you didn’t know then? Will you know more in high school than you do now?

Is My Brain Growing? Look at the measurement of your head compared to Ms. Parkton’s head – What do you notice? Developing the ability to figure things out and solve problems Happens inside your brain Causes: music, looking at pictures and paintings, reading, tasting, talking

Practicing and Learning What is something that you practice? Why do you practice? Connections in the brain need to be used over and over – Practice makes connections stronger

Physical vs. Intellectual Intellectual growth is just as natural as physical growth. – Part of human life cycle When is physical growth most rapid? – When is intellectual growth most rapid? Do they both continue throughout our lives?

Reflect and Discuss What did you learn about growth? – Talk to your partner. – Add your ideas and sketches at the bottom of your page.
