Prostitution and Sexually Explicit Materials

Sexually Explicit Materials (SEM) - Causes sexual arousal to the genitals and intimate behaviors. -Uses photo, magazines, videos and books. -Porn or erotica?

What is Censorship?? ●Censorship occurs when the government, private groups, or individuals give their moral or political opinion on others by limiting words, ideas, or images they deem offensive. ●Not always a good thing. ●U.S. promotes violence.

The Effects of SEM -Feeling of guilt -Enhances Sex life -Sometimes recommended by therapists to women but less often to men. Opens women up to new ideas.

The Most Common is…. Technology is where most SEM is viewed. Men and women use this. 75% men 41% women

Females in Prostitution Sex as Work! -Don’t consider themselves Prostitutes -See it as just “Good Paying Work” -Avoid Emotional Intimacy An exchange of sexual behaviors for money/goods.

Entrance into Prostitution Why Women get involved… - Childhood Sexual Abuse - “Pimps” (Adolescents) - Personal Background (Adults)

Forms of Female Prostitution Four Main Types: 1. Streetwalkers 2. Brothels 3. Masseuses 4. Call Girls

Streetwalkers ( 10% Female Prostitutes) -Bottom of the “Prostitution Hierarchy” -Usually 1st type Young Adolescents get involved in -Found in Local Areas -Dress Provocatively Dangers / Hazards: More Visible, More Likely to get Arrested. More likely to suffer Assault, Kidnapping, Rape, Other Threats

Brothels “Houses of Prostitution” / “Whorehouses” -Usually Found in Large Cities -Legal in 10 Rural Counties in Nevada -Higher status than Streetwalking -Safer ( Panic Buttons, Listening Devices, Surveillance Cameras)

Masseuse -Very Common / Widespread -Different than Brothels -“Massage and Masturbation ONLY” Parlors (M-and-M Parlors) -Avoid Legal difficulties -Advertise themselves (Newspaper, Website Ads) “Massage Parlors”

Call Girls -Highest Status among all Prostitutes -Safest among all other Types (Control Over Customers, Working Conditions) -Usually Educated Middle Class Women -Most Expensive

Males in Prostitution -Most Common: “Street Hustlers” -“Stud Farms” vs “Stables” -Backgrounds Range from Uneducated to Wealthy Middle Class Men -Most introduced through influence of their peers

Prostitution and the Law Female Prostitutes are usually arrested for: -Vagrancy -Loitering -Most commonly: Solicitation.

Support for Prostitution Those who want to legalize want Licensing and Registration by police and health departments Those who want to decriminalize want to remove criminal penalties for engaging in prostitution Reformers: Prostitutes should be accorded the same political and legal protections and rights of all citizens.

Victimization Opposing viewpoint The practice may lead to physical and psychological damage to the prostitute Some prostitutes are “forced” to sell sex Either by pimps, childhood abuse, or by poverty Prostitution should be illegal Supporting viewpoint: Prostitution is a victimless crime Both individuals are consensual Therefore the government should not prohibit it

Ethics and Morality Opposing viewpoint: The freedom of the individual is questionable Is comparable to human trafficking Implies that a human being has a worth and can be bought Legalization may lead to even worse crimes such as child prostitution Supporting viewpoint Unlike the victims of human trafficking, prostitutes do get paid The sex worker is consenting Banning prostitution may leave prostitutes without an income

Other Countries on Prostitution New South Wales of Australia, New Zealand, Germany have decriminalized prostitution. Turkey, Senegal, Denmark and Greece have eliminated some criminal aspects of prostitution. The Netherlands has decriminalized prostitution and legalized brothels.

Juveniles in the Prostitution World Mostly victims than criminal. Sexual and abusive childhood and Running away from home link to adolescent prostitution. Right now the law treats them as criminals instead of helping with counseling, halfway houses, alternative schooling, job training.

human Trafficking ●Human trafficking is a form of modern slavery where people profit from the control and exploitation of others. ●Although slavery is commonly thought to be a thing of the past, human trafficking still exists today throughout the United States and globally.

Bassam Alzarkani, a 33 year old male arrested for Human trafficking in Dumas, TX The Traffickers: ●Traffickers lure and ensnare people into forced labor and sex trafficking by manipulating and exploiting their vulnerabilities ●Human traffickers recruit, transport, harbor, obtain, and exploit victims – often using force, threats, lies, or other psychological coercion ●Traffickers promise a high-paying job, a loving relationship, or new and exciting opportunities. ●In other cases, they may kidnap victims or use physical violence to control them. ●Often the traffickers and their victims share the same national, ethnic, or cultural background ●Traffickers can be lone individuals or extensive criminal networks. Pimps, gangs, family members, labor brokers, employers of domestic servants, small business owners, and large factory owners have all been found guilty of human trafficking

The Victims: ●Children under age 18 induced into commercial sex. ●Adults aged 18 or over induced into commercial sex through force, fraud, or coercion. ●Children and adults induced to perform labor or services through force, fraud, or coercion. Those higher to susceptibility to victimization and human trafficking: Runaway and homeless youth, victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, war or conflict, or social discrimination are frequently targeted by traffickers

●Traffickers use force, fraud, or coercion to control other people for the purpose of engaging in commercial sex or forcing them to provide labor services against their will.

●All trafficking victims share one essential experience – the loss of freedom.
