THE FOLK COSTUMES

Lithuanian Folk Costumes Women wear a white blouse. Blouses have red ornaments. Sleeves are trimmed with embroidery. Skirts often have four colours. The main colours are green and red. Skirts are striped, checked or decorated with patterns. Vests and aprons are typical parts for Lithuanian folk costumes. The pillbox hat is an element common to Lithuanian traditional dress as well. It is often richly decorated and finished with long ribbons. Men wear grey or brown coats, long trousers and high boots. They also wear patterned sashes and hats that are decorated with a ribbon with feathers.

Polish Folk Costumes In this photo, you see both men's and women's Polish traditional costumes. The women in the front of the group wear red vests and skirts with golden trim, and the sleeves of their blouses are tied with red ribbon. White lace aprons complete the outfits. The man in the center of the photo wears a blue vest tied with a sash; on his head is a hat trimmed with decoration.

Turkish Folk Costume One of the typical features of Turkish clothing is the usage of many layers. Very often people wear trousers, a long robe and a jacket on top. Women usually wear several scarves or kerchiefs of different colors. Flamboyance is another typical thing for Turkey. The traditional attire is always colorful, bright and striking.

Croatian Folk Costume For the Croatian males, the traditional dress which is their phenomenal heritage usually consists on loose, wide slacks (gače širkoke) and a shirt, and both are usually either black or white, or both. The men of Croatia may wear a decorative or plain vest (fermen or jačerma), over his shirt, and possibly a waistcoat. The man almost always wears a cap, varying in shape and design depending on the region. The most famous cap is perhaps the Lika Cap, worn in the Lika region for centuries by the people. Footwear, like the women’s’, consists mainly on boots and sandals. Because of the weather, certain places often have woolen vests, cloaks, coats, or fur for the colder regions, and silk and light linens for the warmer climates.

Italian Folk Costumes Women wore plain skirts and bodices with square hats. The flat tops of the hats helped them carry baskets. Men wore pants and shirts. Typically, all peasants’ clothing came in gray, brown, or black. After all, dye was expensive. For special occasions, peasants had a few colorful and embroidered outfits that resembled those of the wealthy.

Spanish Folk Costumes Flamenco is an artform native to the Spanish regions of Andalusia, Extremadura and Murcia.Andalusia ExtremaduraMurcia Flamenco dresses called trajes deforaleas ( brightly colored with many layers of ruffles in the skirt and sleeves. A large shawl called a manton that is hand embroidered with floral patterns. Accessories: large earrings, hair combs, flowers.

Portuguese Folk Costumes Portuguese traditional dress varies regionally, but it typically consists of bouffant long skirts made of striped or checkered fabrics for women and trousers, waistcoats and sombreros for men. Kerchief is an obligatory part of the national costume of the Portuguese women.Bright and vivid colours are a peculiar feature of Portuguese national clothes. However, the national clothing style might vary regionally: from the rich and colourful costumes in Minho to the shy dresses and black kerchiefs in Coimbra. Elaborate embroidery and gold necklaces are traditional elements of the folk costume in Portugal.
