S etting The Hunger Games takes place in a dystopian, future America. The wealthy live in a city called the capitol. The capitol rules twelve other small civilizations called “Districts”. Each one specially produces a specific product or service. These districts are poor and many struggle to survive. The book specifically takes place in District 12, a coal producing district, where a 16-year old girl named Katniss Everdeen lives. The district is the poorest of all of the nation.

The Hunger Games Every year, in this society the capitol picks two children from each district to battle each other in a brutal death match. Every child’s name is added to a raffle once per year from ages 12 to 18. To make things even more interesting, children can place there names in again to receive a meager years supply of bread and oil. The bread itself bakes down into a mushy grain, therefore it is not very good. S

The Arena This is where the 24 children (also called “Tributes”) face-off. They are thrown into a wilderness area that can range anywhere from a burning desert, to a glacier. There are supplies in the area where all 24 tributes are lifted into the arena. There is almost always a bloody battle for supplies. Anything you can find or do to survive is completely legal. During the game, a specific group of capitol residents called gamemakers, are allowed to interfere with the tributes. They can offer supplies that are delivered via airdrop and cause battles, or cause nasty disasters, some of which are natural, some are not. S

C haracters Katniss Everdeen Katniss Everdeen is a 16-year old, who lives in District 12. Her father died in a mining accident that lost the family’s main source of income. In order to stay alive she hunts in the woods outside of her district; this practice is considered illegal. Katniss is cunning, calculating, and usually keeps to her self. Her sister is picked for the Hunger Games and she volunteers to take her place. She is an amazing shot with a bow and arrow She is a major character who is dynamic, she is Also a protagonist. wiki/Katniss_Everdeen

More Characters A blonde bakers son that lives in the richer area of district twelve. He is picked for the Hunger Games as was Katniss. Peeta and Katniss are actually connected because, when Katniss couldn’t supply food for herself and family, Peeta gave her bread. He is a likeable, forgiving person, who turns out to have a secret crush on Katniss. He is a major character who is dynamic He is a protaganist Peeta Mellark C

Figurative Language

F ImageryForeshadowing “Eyes the color of rotting squash” “Hot, sweet, creamy liquid” “The magnificence of the glistening buildings towering in rainbow hues” “I field like a old piece of leather, drying cracking in the heat” “Already the boy with the bread is slipping away form me” During the reaping in the book, Katniss tells the story about how Peeta gave her bread. This foreshadows the fact that they will be back together soon

F SimileMetaphor “Prim’s face is as fresh as a raindrop, as lovely as a Primrose for which she was named” “Rosy streaks of sunlight were breaking in the east

F AlliterationPersonification “Somehow, my fumbling fingers release the buckle and I fall to the ground a heap,…” “My calf is screaming…” "We have to stand for a few minutes in the doorway of the train while the cameras gobble up our images…”

Plot

P Rising Action Katniss hunts in the woods with Gale Katniss and family attend the reaping Prim gets pick, Katniss volunteers for her Peeta’s love for Katniss is revealed Katniss fights mixed feelings about Peeta due to the fact that she might have to kill him The hunger games begin Picture from: TheHungerGamesWiki.comTheHungerGamesWiki.com

Katniss drops a hornets nest on them Katniss allies with Rue Rue is killed Katniss is told that two tributes can survive if they are from the same district Katniss finds Peeta, badly wounded Katniss diagnoses him with blood poisoning

P Climax The gamemakers offer “The one thing that all the tributes need” Katniss uses medicine, obtained from a sponser, to put Peeta to sleep and retrieve medicine Katniss fights for the medicine and obtains it Katniss and a healthier Peeta go hunting A pack of wild dogs chases them pack to the starting area, there they find the 3 rd and final remaining tribute. He is killed. The gamemakers admit that two tributes cannot win the games

P Resolution Katniss and Peeta attempt a double suicide by eating poisonous plants At the last minute, the gamemakers announce that they can both win The capitol shows anger towards Katniss for defying them. Peeta and Katniss return home Falling Action

Conflcit

C Man Vs. SocietyMan Vs. Nature This type of conflict occurs in multiple ways throughout the book. The first example is Katniss’ attempt to survive the Hunger Games while the capitol attempts to kill her due to her defiance. This occurs during the Hunger Games as Katniss attempts to survive the animal attacks and harsh weather in the arena.

Theme and Resoulution

T&R ThemeResolution I think the theme in this book is “In the face of adversity, do what you know is right” I think this because of what Peeta said, that he wanted to die as himself and not a piece in their games, and because Katniss defies the captiol to save Peeta The outcome of this booked is sort of a mixed bag. On one hand Katniss returns home famous and rich, away from the struggles of the poor, but a new conflict starts as she attempts to save herself from the capitol.
