ALS in Perspective

Housekeeping ALS COURSE NAME BADGE

Course Health & Safety Report Pre-existing Injury or Injury Sustained During Course Immediately Latex or Other Allergy Defibrillator Safety

Accounts for around 40% of all deaths under the age of 75 years Presenting rhythm in most of these cases is VF/VT i.e. shockable In-hospital cardiac arrest more commonly non-VF/VT Cardiovascular disease

Chain of survival

Important considerations Early recognition of abnormal physiology Identify the deteriorating patient at risk of cardiac arrest Cardiac arrest prevention Effective post resuscitation care to optimise outcome

Adult ALS algorithm

Vary with manufacturer Check local equipment Defibrillator energy 200 Joules unless manufacturer demonstrates better outcomes with alternate energy level If unsure, deliver 200 Joules DO NOT DELAY SHOCK Energy levels for defibrillators on this course… Defibrillation energies

Standardised CPR for adults Multidisciplinary: Doctors, nurses and other relevant healthcare providers Resuscitation team members Resuscitation team leaders ALS course learning outcomes

Instructor Nomination All Instructors have completed this course Who are your Instructors? Assessed on clinical performance and non- technical skills Interactive & supportive Communication Team member Passing the course is a great achievement Nomination for Instructor development is a bonus (average of 1 in 10 candidates)

ALS course format Manual Lectures Skill stations Workshops Cardiac Arrest Simulation (CAS) training

ALS course assessment MCQ Practical skills (continuous assessment) Airway management Initial assessment and resuscitation Cardiac Arrest Simulation (CASTest) Provider certificate valid for 4 years Credentialed internationally and by professional colleges Recertification

Any questions?

Cardiovascular disease remains a major cause of cardiac arrest in adults Earlier recognition of the deteriorating patient may reduce the number of cardiac arrests The ALS course teaches a standardised approach using several educational formats and assessment tools Summary
