One that lacks a subject
Presentation transcript:

Problems… “Get to bed!” “I don’t think so.” punctuation inside the quotation marks. If a quotation occurs mid sentence, introduce it with a comma. My momma always told me, “Life is like a box of chocolates.” Quotations start with a capital letter. Except: “Life is like,” she hesitated, “a box of chocolates.” Lower case first person pronoun I is NEVER EVER EVER EVER EVER lower case. Subject/Verb and Noun/Pronoun agreement. Capitalization – all rules Run on sentences (2 independent clauses separated by nothing or a mere comma)

Colon: separate 2 clauses, what follows explains what precedes. I really need coffee: I didn’t sleep last night. Semi-Colon: showing a closer relationship between ideas than a period would show. I studied all night; I sure hope I pass. Comma + Conjunction: I ate all of the peanut butter, but I apologized. Period. New sentence. I slept. I woke. I sipped coffee. I ran to work. I tripped on the way out of the door. Spell out numbers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WW: Wrong Word  WC: Word Choice Verb Tense: Past, Present, and future walk into a room: it was tense. 2 nd Person: get rid of it.

What should I write about? Making Good Food Learning New Things Being Humbled by failure

Sample Anecdote I believe in making good food. Just yesterday, after my morning coffee I ambled into the kitchen. I placed the seasoned cast iron grill pan on the high flame and put together my list of carefully chosen ingredients. First, the aioli! I flattened the white, thinly papered clove and tossed it into the food processor. I spooned the rich mayonnaise in after it. I carefully chopped the remaining cilantro from the produce drawer and added it to the party. Next the juicy, ripe lemon: first sliced, then aggressively squeezed it into the bowl. Salt. Pepper. Cayenne pepper, of course. And WHIRRRRRRRRR! Delicious.

Failure The year: The stage, literal. In front of eleven thousand people I quietly and gleefully awaited my turn. It arrived, after what seemed like ages. I stepped up to the microphone, waved to the anxious crowd and then it happened. I repeated the same phrase twice. “Who cares?” you might say, I did. I was supposed to be clever and change my phrase slightly for a laugh, but I didn’t. So I smiled, waved, forgot to tell them my name and gracefully walked backstage to cry into the generous shoulder of my hairdresser.
