GENESIS Chapter 42 SIMEON HELD HOSTAGE I.Introduction A.Joseph went from dungeon to King’s palace! 1.From rags to robes.

a)At 17 he was sold into slavery. (1)Went through many great trials! (2)A long time to hold to the promise the Lord had not forsaken him! (a)In today’s terms:

(i)He was serving as a slave. (ii)He is not allowed to have a girlfriend! (iii)He is rotting in an Egyptian prison! (a)Far from an “over-night” success.

B.About to see what Joseph is made of. 1.A testimony of a great man of God. a)Many have “jail- house” religion! b)Easier to walk with the Lord - locked up.

(1) How Joseph handles it. 2.Warehouses are full of grain. a)There is bread in Egypt. (1) Genesis 41:56-57 II.Genesis 42:1-4

A.They are all starving. 1.Joseph busy saving Egypt. a)Any wonder they were jealous of him? (1) They could see the potential! 2.Jacob not going to send Benjamin!

III. Genesis 42:5-7 A.Imagine the emotion Joseph felt when he saw his brothers? 1.Would you want to kiss them? 2.Joseph needs some answers.

IV.Genesis 42:8-13 A.Joseph puts them on the defensive. 1.Benjamin was still alive! 2.Joseph was 17 when they saw his last.

a)He looked like an Egyptian! (1)Not through with them. V.Genesis 42:14-20 A.He doesn’t trust them.

1.Soul searching takes place after 3 days in jail! VI.Genesis 42:21-24 A.They discuss what happened to Joseph. 1.Joseph had an interpreter.

2.They admit their guilt! a)Emotional for Joseph! (1)Reuben didn’t want him dead. (2)They knew they were wrong! VII.Genesis 42:25-28

A.9 brothers return home! 1.One discovers the money in the grain sack! a)This would be a blessing. (1)Is it a setup? (a) Not a joyous occasion!

VIII. Genesis 42:29-38 A.Each man’s money had been returned! 1.Jacob refuses to let Benjamin go to Egypt. a)Joseph was under Reuben’s care when he disappeared!

(1)Jacob not willing to lose another son! IX.CONCLUSION A.Come back next week to see how this turns out.
